Born: March 28, 1975
Best known for her Miss USA victory at the age of 20 in 1995, Shanna Moakler subsequently parlayed her fame into recognition as a centerfold model and a reality television star. A native of Providence, RI, Moakler grew up in a middle-class family as a dentist’s daughter, then late in high school caught her first taste of fame with a 1992 Miss Teen USA victory at the age of 17. After high school, Moakler spent time in Miami, New York, and Los Angeles, planning to capitalize on her svelte figure, photogenic countenance, and Miss Teen victory by establishing herself as a print and runway model. Her plan worked beautifully, and in addition to culling a tremendous amount of attention in that sphere, Moakler re-entered the world of pageantry and won the 1995 Miss USA title.
At that point, Moakler also began signing for scripted roles, essaying parts in such projects as the features Friends ’til the End (1997) and Love_Stinks (1999). In 2001, she posed nude for Playboy and turned up in the December 2001 issue of that magazine as the Playmate of the Month. Her broadest fame, however, arrived courtesy of her relationship with — and marriage to — tattooed rock drummer Travis_Barker, with whom she had two children. The pair divorced within a couple years, but in the interim starred together on the celebrity reality series Meet the Barkers, which chronicled the vicissitudes of their marriage. Following the Barkers‘ divorce, Moakler participated in season 3 of Dancing with the Stars as the celebrity half of a pair that also included Jesse DeSoto. They were eliminated second. In 2008, Moakler drew from her extensive pageant experience by serving as a judge on the reality series.

Her acting career has been fruitful as well, with roles on the TV series Pacific Blue, and in the films Poison Ivy: The New Seduction and Love Stinks, among others. Positive news came in 1998, when she obtained a role as a crime-fighting beach babe on the USA Network’s Pacific Blue. A Providence, Rhode Island native, Shanna Elisabeth Moakler was born on March 28th, 1975. She led an everyday girl’s existence in high school until, as a late “bloomer,” guys started to notice something special about her. She blossomed into a full-bodied, 5’8″ beauty and started to model.

She began modeling in Miami after graduation, and, at 18, set her sights on the Miss USA Pageant. In 1995, she competed in the popular event and came in second to Chelsi Smith. A few months later, Smith won the Miss Universe crown and thus turned over her USA title to Moakler.
During her reign as Miss USA, she got a taste of the spotlight, but did not enjoy the constant chaperoning that went hand in hand with the tiara. Moakler was too much of a free spirit to be harnessed like that and was glad when her one-year reign was over.
Moakler proceeded to get involved in television, landing her first role in Friends ‘Til the End with Shannon Doherty, and film, doing the raunchy Poison Ivy: The New Seduction, both in 1997.
The publicity continued when she started dating famous boxer Oscar De La Hoya. For the first years of the relationship, life was good for the poster-worthy duo and they had a daughter together; Atiana, born March 29th, 1999. During that time, Moakler was busy acting: you can catch her as a flight attendant in The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler and in a more significant role as a beach-patrol cop, from 1998 to 2000, on the series Pacific Blue.

Although they were engaged, the bond between De La Hoya and Moakler soon broke. Moakler accused the boxer of alcoholism and, after seeing him with another woman at the Latin Grammy Awards, recognized the relationship was over. She filed a $62.5 million US palimony suit in December of 2000, on the grounds that he was abusive and used Moakler and their daughter as show to promote his image.
